COLUMBIA, SC — A major educational investment is headed to Broad River Road, marking a pivotal moment for one of Richland County’s fastest-growing yet persistently overlooked communities.

The newly approved English & Corbin Institute (ECI), a tuition-free public charter school, will be located in the Broad River District, bringing a fresh model of education to an area experiencing rapid population growth and housing expansion.

For residents and community advocates, the announcement is more than just a new school. It is a long-overdue acknowledgment of a corridor that has quietly become one of the most critical population centers in the Midlands.

Growth Without Attention

Since 2017, the Broad River District has seen a steady rise in population. That growth accelerated sharply following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, as rising housing costs in the City of Columbia pushed families outward in search of affordability and stability.

Today, Broad River has become a refuge for working-class and low-income residents. Yet the narrative is often incomplete.

Active land clearing and grading mark the early stages of the Broad Vista Townhomes development along Broad River Road, where more than 200 new residential units are planned as part of the corridor’s rapid growth. The project, expected to be built out by 2027. JavarJuarez©2026

The district is not just a place of displacement. It is a community of opportunity.

Large single-family homes, generous lot sizes, and a substantial existing housing stock define much of the area. At the same time, nearly 600 new housing units are currently under development near the SLED Complex and Harbison State Forest, signaling continued expansion along the corridor.

Despite this, residents have long pointed to a lack of proportional investment from Richland County in infrastructure, education, and public resources.

The arrival of ECI may begin to shift that dynamic.

A New Model of Education

English & Corbin Institute will open serving grades K through 7, with plans to expand into a full K–12 institution.

Backed by the Erskine Charter Institute and approved by the South Carolina Department of Education, the school introduces a forward-thinking academic model centered on real-world application, particularly through the lens of the global sports industry.

Students will have exposure to career pathways including:

  • Sports Management

  • Sports Medicine

  • Sports Agency

  • Sports Broadcasting

This approach blends traditional academics with career readiness, mentorship, and cultural exposure to both American and international sports.

The institute is also endorsed by notable figures Alex English and Tyrone Corbin, adding credibility and visibility to the initiative.

Why Broad River Matters

The decision to place ECI on Broad River Road is not incidental. It reflects a growing recognition that the district is no longer peripheral. It is central to Columbia’s future.

As families continue to relocate to the area, the demand for quality education options has grown alongside housing. Yet, for years, that demand has outpaced investment.

This school represents a step toward balancing that equation.

It also raises an important question for local leadership: if nearly 600 homes can be built in the corridor, why has comparable investment in schools, infrastructure, and economic development lagged behind?

Building for the Next Generation

At its core, English & Corbin Institute is designed to prepare students not just for graduation, but for opportunity.

By integrating academics with career exploration and mentorship, the school aims to equip students with both the knowledge and vision to navigate a rapidly evolving economy.

For Broad River families, that promise carries weight.

In a district often defined by what it lacks, ECI offers a glimpse of what intentional investment can look like. It is a signal that growth, when matched with opportunity, can transform not just a corridor, but an entire community.

And for Broad River Road, that transformation may be just beginning.
