A Night to Remember: Winnsboro Comes Alive with Community Spirit and New Leadership

Winnsboro, SC - Last night, under the clear summer sky, the town of Winnsboro reminded everyone what true community looks like. On Saturday, June 28, 2025, dozens gathered downtown at the iconic Town Clock for an evening hosted by the Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce. With DJ Irv spinning tracks and a lively line dance showcase drawing all ages to the street, the heart of Winnsboro pulsed with music, laughter, and unity.
Families filled the square — children ran free without a care, elders pulled up lawn chairs, and neighbors caught up under the glow of streetlights and watchful but friendly law enforcement presence. Safety wasn’t an issue — barriers were up, lights were on, and the atmosphere was pure joy.
For those who know Winnsboro’s deep, sometimes painful history, the sight was especially meaningful. The Town Clock, once a silent witness to the injustices of segregation and exclusion, stood last night as a symbol reclaimed. Where some see painful reminders, many here now see hallowed ground — a place to gather, connect, and write a new story together.
This town, with its breathtaking forests and rich cultural heritage, is clearly ready for a renaissance. Signs of positive change are everywhere: new restaurants and shops are eyeing the charming downtown spaces, and fresh leadership is stepping up. Winnsboro now celebrates its first Black mayor, Demetrius Chatman, who joined the festivities and was warmly welcomed by residents eager to share ideas, snap photos, and speak about community and family.
When Representative Annie E. McDaniel first encouraged CUBN to visit the Fairfield County Chamber months ago, we didn’t know exactly what we would find. What we discovered was a place with a rich history and countless stories still waiting to be told — and we’re grateful she did. Last night proved just how powerful those stories can be when a community comes together to honor its past while boldly writing its next chapter. It wasn’t just another summer night; it was a clear sign that Winnsboro is turning the page — preserving its roots while building a future that feels inclusive, hopeful, and joyful for everyone, from the elders who remember where we’ve been to the children dancing freely under the Town Clock.
Congratulations to the Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Chatman, and the people of Winnsboro for showing what it looks like when a town comes together on one accord. If last night was any indication, there’s so much more to come — and CUBNSC will be there to share it every step of the way.
