Nick Emmanwori: Tackling Hunger, One Turkey at a Time

Updated: Nov 26

USC Football Star Nick Emmanwori hosted a Thanksgiving Turkey Drive on Monday at Roys Grille for needy families

By Javar Juarez (CUBNSC) Irmo, SC - The holiday season is often marked by gratitude, family, and of course, a feast to remember. But for South Carolina junior defensive back Nick Emmanwori, it’s also a time to give back. On a crisp November afternoon, Emmanwori joined forces with pitmaster Chris Williams, owner of Irmo’s beloved Roy’s Grille, to deliver a special Thanksgiving blessing to 100 families in need.

In the heart of Irmo, the parking lot of Roy’s Grille was abuzz with excitement as families gathered to receive their Thanksgiving turkeys. Smiling kids posed for photos, parents expressed heartfelt thanks, and Emmanwori shared words of encouragement while signing autographs. The joy in the air was as palpable as the smoky aroma of Roy’s famous barbecue brisket and ribs.

“It’s always a good thing giving back,” Emmanwori shared, his voice brimming with sincerity. “These kids are going to remember this moment and have a good Thanksgiving. It just warms my heart knowing I was able to be a part of that.”

Emmanwori, who is no stranger to community events, credits his own experiences as a freshman for inspiring his commitment to giving back. “I remember Dakereon Joyner used to do a lot of events like this. I reached out to him and just learned how to give back to the community. He gave me some tips and a guide, and I’ve just been following in his steps.”

Partnering with the school district, Emmanwori and Williams identified families who could use a little extra help this holiday season. Each family received a voucher for a fresh turkey, with Roy’s Grille generously offering to prepare the turkeys for those who preferred a ready-made feast.

For Williams, teaming up with Emmanwori was a no-brainer. “It’s a passion of mine to be able to give back to my community, and doing it with Nick, who I’ve known most of his life, is a blessing,” he said. “To see him ascending and doing the things he’s doing, it’s just amazing.”

The event wasn’t just about turkeys—it was a full community celebration. Guests enjoyed scratch-made desserts from local artisans Johnita Lettsome of Klassy Creations and Kema Weldon of Purposely Made Sweets. Their treats added a sweet finish to an already memorable day.

For Emmanwori, Thanksgiving is as much about creating memories as it is about the food. “I have four older brothers, and Thanksgiving growing up was always a time for us to come together and create the best memories,” he reminisced. “It’s a family holiday, and I want everyone to feel that joy.”

As he handed out turkeys, Emmanwori reflected on his own motivations. “Whenever times get tough, I think about my brothers and my mom. I’m never without motivation. I talk to the Lord every day, every game—my mother, who is very religious, instilled that in me.”

As Thanksgiving approaches, Emmanwori has a heartfelt message for everyone: “Have a great Thanksgiving. Don’t take anything for granted. Enjoy the little moments and spend time with family—you never know when it could be your last chance.”

For the families who walked away with more than just a turkey, Emmanwori’s generosity was a reminder of the true spirit of the season. With a plate full of gratitude and a heart full of joy, this Gamecock star is proving that giving back is always a win.
