Irmo, South Carolina, buzzed with excitement on Saturday as Vets Are Forever hosted their annual cookout—a lively gathering of U.S. military veterans, car enthusiasts, and families united by service, fellowship, and a passion for high-octane fun. This community-driven club goes beyond car culture, exemplifying camaraderie, a commitment to supporting veterans, and a shared love for sleek Corvettes.

Leaders With Legacy

The club, led by President Anthony James, continues to grow its chapters and influence across South Carolina. Among the leadership is Mr. Hemphill Pride, son of renowned civil rights attorney Hemphill Pride Sr., adding a layer of legacy and community impact to the club’s mission.

Tony Downs, a U.S. Air Force veteran and a fire captain with 22 years of service, alongside his wife, Marcia Downs, displayed their electric-blue Corvette dripping in Dallas Cowboys-themed accents. Their sleek hot rod stole the show, adding a dynamic flair to the event.

The group’s Greenville chapter, established through the efforts of member Julius Diesel, has gained traction with regular Corvette and coffee cruises in the Upstate. “We’ve made a lot of friends, and that’s thanks to Julius following his passion,” said President James.

Vette’s Are Forever was also proud to have been featured at the Juneteenth celebration hosted by the African American Historical Society of Irmo earlier this year. Today’s cookout was another opportunity to celebrate community and fellowship, with several local club presidents in attendance to join in the fun.

A Day Filled with Food, Fun, and Fellowship

Saturday’s cookout wasn’t just about great food—it was about connecting with fellow car enthusiasts and spreading joy in the community. The club had a full agenda, which included raffles, door prizes, and competitions. Among the highlights was the loud exhaust competition, where car owners revved their engines to see who could make the most noise.

Other competitions included prizes for the oldest and newest Corvettes on-site, with participants directed to Hemphill Pride for judging. A $250 gift card from Lowe’s Detailing was also up for grabs, ensuring that every Corvette looked as sharp as possible.

Attendees were encouraged to purchase 50/50 raffle tickets, ranging from $1 to $20, with the promise of exciting giveaways throughout the day. The event’s emphasis on mingling ensured that club members and visitors connected—last year, some groups kept to themselves, but this time, the focus was on fellowship and unity.

Several local clubs took the stage to introduce themselves and share their stories, including:

Augusta Pride Riders: Frederick Morton, the club president, announced that the group was preparing to celebrate its 15th anniversary. “We’re still recovering from the hurricane in Augusta, so keep us in your prayers. But we’re proud to be here today and grateful for the support.”

Capital City Corvette Club: Mike Bruce, a founding member, shared the club’s history. “We’ve been around since 2001, right here in Columbia, and we now have about 90 families involved. We appreciate the invitation and the fellowship today.”

Tri-County Corvette Club: With 70 members on the road, Tri-County proudly celebrated 15 years of camaraderie. “It’s great to be part of events like this. We are happy to be here and connect with other clubs.”

Vette’s for Vet’s: Representing seven states already, this ambitious group raises funds to provide home makeovers for veterans. “Our goal is to have a chapter in all 50 states,” shared Wayne Wright, an events director. “We’re honored to be here today.”

More Than Cars: A Heart for Service

Vette’s Are Forever is known not only for their love of Corvettes but also for their big-hearted service to the community. Earlier this year, the club flooded the lobby of the Children’s Hospital with Easter baskets to bring joy to children battling cancer and other illnesses. “This club has heart,” emphasized President James. “We’re committed to being positive role models in South Carolina communities, especially for youth and young adults.”

The club also had the honor of escorting the national basketball champion South Carolina Gamecocks earlier this year, celebrating their victory with pride. “We didn’t just win against Bama, we showed up for our community,” James said enthusiastically.

Giving Thanks and Looking Forward

Before diving into the cookout feast, attendees gathered for a heartfelt prayer led by a club chaplain, giving thanks for the day, safe travels, and the opportunity to fellowship.

“We thank God for this beautiful day, for bringing us together in fellowship, and for 22 years of Vette’s Are Forever. Bless the hands that prepared this food, and may we continue to grow stronger as a community,” the chaplain prayed.

With a vision of expanding their chapters and impact, Vette’s Are Forever continues to grow, driven by passion and purpose. If you’re looking for a club that’s doing big things, making a difference, and having fun along the way—this is the one to join.
