At the board meeting, held ahead of Friday’s swearing-in ceremony at 4 PM at Eau Claire High School in Columbia, South Carolina, the district bid farewell to longstanding board members and reflected on years of progress and challenges.

Dr. Craig Witherspoon’s Tenure Nears Its Conclusion

Commissioner Jamie Devine commended Dr. Witherspoon for his contributions, which included increased graduation rates, teacher salary improvements, and technological advancements that streamlined district operations. Under Dr. Witherspoon’s leadership, the district achieved full accreditation through the international AdvancedED Commission and fostered over 400 community partnerships.

Reflecting on his time in Richland One, Dr. Witherspoon expressed gratitude, saying, “We’ve done some amazing things in this district, and it continues to be a pleasure, contrary to what some folks think. Commissioners Tamika Myers and Cheryl Harris gave heartfelt final statements as they concluded their service on the board.

Tamika Myers spoke about the challenges of leadership, thanking Dr. Witherspoon and the district staff for their unwavering commitment to students. “Take some time out and just realize you are blessing the future,” she urged staff, emphasizing their impact on the next generation.

Cheryl Harris, a 26-year veteran of service, reflected on her 12 years as a commissioner, including her legacy as an officer for 11 years. “From 1,000-year floods to a pandemic, we’ve weathered incredible challenges,” Harris said. She praised the district’s resilience and ongoing dedication to its children, saying, “Our one strong will forever be the legacy of this district.” Harris pledged to remain involved, highlighting her continued commitment to education and community service.

Concerns about unresolved issues cast a shadow over the night’s celebratory tone. Community members continue to demand accountability for allegations of payroll fraud and nepotism involving Barbara Weston and her sister, Cynthia Flemming-Tyler. A 2022 audit revealed significant issues, including the misuse of the district’s Kronos timekeeping system and unauthorized pay, raising serious questions about oversight and governance. The community’s persistent calls for a deeper investigation highlight an urgent need for transparency and accountability within the district.

Looking Ahead: Hope Amid Uncertainty

As two new board members prepare to be sworn in this Friday, many hope for a fresh perspective and renewed focus on the district’s core mission—serving the children. However, with political tensions and unresolved controversies looming, the path forward may be fraught with challenges.

Commissioner Cheryl Harris’s parting words resonate as a call to action: “Our children are counting on you every single day. Put your shoulder to the wheel and continue to do the work because it matters.”

Friday’s swearing-in ceremony will not only mark the beginning of new leadership but also serve as a moment to reflect on the district’s accomplishments and challenges as it enters a new chapter.
