Tucked away at the end of Diamond Lane in Columbia, South Carolina, just off Broad River Road in the 29210 zip code, lies one of the city’s most exciting hidden gems. Located at 140 Diamond Lane, this state-of-the-art facility is home to ReCreation Athletics—a powerful and growing hub for athletic development, community engagement, and regional sports excellence.
Over the weekend, the energy inside this impressive arena was electric as it played host to the Southeastern Amateur Basketball Association (SABA) All-Star Game. The facility, which boasts three full-sized indoor basketball courts and skybox, a box office, a full-service kitchen, and a fully secured welcome center and grounds, proved more than capable of hosting a major multi-day tournament with professionalism and flair.
An Exclusive with Dre McBride, Founder of SABA

We caught up with Dre McBride, founder and director of the Southeastern Amateur Basketball Association, who was enthusiastic about what the weekend represented:
“This is the Southeastern Amateur Basketball Association All-Star game. We’ve got kids here from all over—North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Virginia. These players are showing up to compete, to showcase their talent, and to grow.”
McBride noted the commitment of traveling teams:
“They’re coming in from hours away and staying overnight here in Columbia. That’s a boost for the local economy, and it shows that the city can be a destination for sports tourism across the river.”
Since its founding in 2022, SABA has already helped players secure scholarship offers from D1, D2, JUCO programs and beyond. McBride, who is deeply rooted in the sport through both personal and family involvement, emphasized:
“We’re for the kids. We represent the Southeast, and we’re proud of the growth.”
SABA maintains an active presence on social media via @SABAHoops on Instagram and Facebook, and can be reached through its website at sabahoops.com.
A Family Affair: Why It Matters

Beyond the slam dunks and sharp passes, the tournament weekend was a reminder of how sports can help young people develop leadership, teamwork, and confidence. On-site, we met the Garner family, whose son Mason, a 4th grader from Lexington, SC, was suiting up for his game.
“Being with other kids from different cities and cultures allows him to learn and grow,” said Hillard Garner, Mason’s father. “It’s more than just basketball—it’s about social development.”

Mason’s mother, Felicia Garner, added:
“It helps him tap into that inner drive. Whether you make it or not, this league pushes kids to grow. It’s not just an investment in athletics—it’s an investment in their future.”

ReCreation Athletics: A Facility Built for Community

The campus at Word of God Church and Ministries—home to ReCreation Athletics—is more than a venue; it’s a safe, nurturing environment where children can be seen, supported, and elevated. The indoor arena includes a fitness gym and has recently been expanded to feature outdoor soccer training areas, adding even more value for families and teams in the Midlands region.
As Columbia continues to grow, venues like this are increasingly positioned to play a vital role in hosting NCAA-caliber events, community-centered tournaments, and impactful youth development programs.
With facilities like this, the Broad River District isn’t just making noise—it’s becoming the heartbeat of youth sports and athletic opportunity in Columbia.
