School Schedule Changes Announced in Wake of Tropical Storm Helene


COLUMBIA, S.C. – In response to the continued damage from Tropical Storm Helene, several school districts across South Carolina are adjusting their schedules and implementing alternative learning plans for Monday, September 30, 2024. The storm, which caused widespread power outages and hazardous conditions, has left many communities without electricity, hot meals, or basic amenities. Here's a breakdown of the latest changes to school operations in affected districts:



District Closures and Delays


Fairfield County

eLearning Day: The Fairfield County School District will conduct an eLearning Day on Monday, September 30, 2024. Students will receive instructions online.: https://www.fairfield1.org/


Kershaw County

Two-Hour Delay: Schools will open later, with elementary schools starting at 9:30 a.m., middle schools at 9:45 a.m., and high schools at 10 a.m.: https://www.kcsdschools.net/


Lexington One

Closed: All Lexington One schools and offices will be closed. All extracurricular activities are also canceled for Monday.: https://www.lexington1.net/


Lexington Two

Closed: Schools and offices are closed, along with all after-school activities and adult education classes. However, free lunch meals will be available for pick-up at three schools: Pine Ridge Middle, Cayce Elementary, and Riverbank Elementary between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. No student ID is required for meals.: https://www.lex2.org/


Lexington Four

Lexington-Richland 5

Closed: The district has canceled school and will use February 17, 2025, as a makeup day. Lunch will be available for students at Irmo High, Dutch Fork High, and Chapin High between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Families must provide identification to pick up meals.: https://www.lexrich5.org/


Newberry County

eLearning: The district will continue eLearning through Wednesday, October 2. Additionally, food and internet access will be provided at Newberry High, Mid-Carolina High, and the Whitmire Community Center from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day during the school closure.: https://www.newberry.k12.sc.us/


Richland One

Closed: All schools and offices are closed. Meals will be available for drive-thru pickup from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Carver-Lyon Elementary, Eau Claire High, Lower Richland High, and the district’s Central Kitchen.: https://www.richlandone.org/


Richland Two

eLearning Day: Asynchronous online instruction will be provided. Breakfast and lunch will be available for pickup at five schools: Bethel Elementary, Pontiac Elementary, Kelly Mill Middle, Killian Elementary, and Dent Middle, with service hours from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: https://www.richland2.org/


Saluda County

Closed Until Further Notice: All schools in Saluda County will remain closed as storm recovery continues.:https://www.saludaschools.org/


Sumter County

Normal Schedule: The Sumter County School District will resume regular operations on Monday, September 30.: https://sumterschools.net/

Midlands Technical College
